Michael Williams, 7th Dan – Barbados

Michael Williams began his training in Barbados in 1978.

“My Cousin Tony, who now lives in California, went to the club to see what it was about. I just went for the drive. I signed up, he didn’t. I got hooked, the rest is history.”

In August 2018, Shihan Williams was promoted to the rank of 7th Dan by Shuseki Shihan Frank Woon-A-Tai at the IKD World Cup in Barbados. Shihan Williams worked his way through the ranks of karate and tested for black belts in 1981, 1983, 1991 (ISKF Master Camp) and 2001. All of these tests were conducted by Shihan Teruyuki Okazaki. In 2011, after the formation of the International Karate Daigaku, Shihan Williams tested for his 6th Dan under Shihan Frank Woon-A-Tai at the IKD’s 1st World Camp.

Shihan Michael trains under the watchful eyes of Shihan Alice and Paul Bernstein at the Barbados Shotokan Karate Club. Over the years he has also received instruction from Shihan Peter Warren, who is still with ISKF, and Shihan Dexter Shim when he studied Medicine here in Barbados. Not to mention all of the visiting instructors who visited Barbados.

Shihan Williams competed from 1982-2000. In that time he would travel the World to compete. His journeys would see him throughout the Caribbean, as well as in, Canada, USA, Guyana, Venezuela, Mexico , Panama and Japan. He would earn medals at every event, except in Japan.

“My best was Venezuela. I was silver medallist in individual kumite at the Pan American Championships in 1991.”

Shihan Williams is marries with two children and works as a Landscape Designer. When he is not working or training he is making small household decorative items.
