Sadie McFarlane, 1st Dan – Prince Albert, SK, Canada
Sadie McFarlane, 1st Dan, started training in September 2015 when she was 8 years old. She tried other extra curricular activities which failed to hold her interest. Sadie asked her parents if she could try karate. They agreed and the rest is history. Within a year Sadie’s other 3 family members had joined the Prince Albert Budokai Karate Club in Prince Albert, SK, CA.
Sadie moved through the ranks to become a Shodan. The journey saw her test for 8 kyu on 11/22/15 with Sensei Chris Lair. Her 6 kyu exam on 27/03/16 with Shihan Frank Woon-A-Tai. She tested for 5kyu on 25/06/16 with Sensei Chris Lair. Her 4 kyu test was on 27/11/2016 with Shihan Marcel Lussier. She would received her 3 kyu following an exam on 17/12/2016 with Shihan Marcel Lussier. Visiting instructor, Shihan David Pyke tested her for 2 kyu on 12/03/2017. She earned her 1 kyu on 24/06/2017 from Shihan Marcel Lussier. On 01/04/2018, Sadie achieved the rank of Shodan from Shihan Joseph Woon-A-Tai.
Sadie’s primary instructors have been Sensei Chris Lair (6th dan) and Shihan Marcel Lussier (7th dan). Sadie credits her skill development, in large part, to having both of these exemplary instructors teaching in her area. At provincial, national and international tournaments Sadie has also had the opportunity to train under the leadership of Shuseki Shihan Frank Woon-A-Tai (9th dan), Shihan Joseph Woon-A- Tai (8th dan) and Shihan David Pyke (8th dan).
Sadie is an accomplished competitor at a very young age. She has competed Regionally, Nationally and Internationally. Most recently, she competed at the IKD World Cup in Bridgetown, Barbados in August 2018. She earned a Bronze medal in kata. In March of 2018, she was Female Competitor of the Year at the Saskatchewan IKD Provincial Tournament. This was a repeat performance as she would the same honors in March of 2017. She competed at the IKD Canada Cup in Saint Jerome, Quebec in November 2016. There she was a Gold Medalist in Kata. Sadie has multiple medal wins at provincial and inter-provincial tournaments. She continues to compete locally, provincial, nationally and internationally.

Sadie has truly enjoyed all of the travel opportunities that involvement in karate have given her. She was able to experience her first plane ride and first train ride on route to the Canada Cup in Saint Jerome Quebec in the fall of 2017 and loves these new experiences!
Sadie is a joy to be around. She quickly made new friends at the recent IKD World Cup in Barbados. Her karate skills are exemplary and if she continues her training will be a top notch competitor in the IKD. Congratulations Sadie and keep training!
